Ann Arbor is one of the closest classic fall destinations to Mid-Michigan, and October is its best month. From the Flint and Grand Blanc area, the drive down US-23 takes about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes, an easy day trip or a relaxed overnight escape. Cider mills, a Saturday farmers market, free university gardens, and a walkable downtown give you plenty to fill a weekend. Here is how to plan a fall getaway to Ann Arbor with hours, costs, and practical details.

Getting There from Mid-Michigan

From the Flint area, take US-23 south through Livingston County; from Grand Blanc, expect about 70 minutes, and from Fenton about an hour. The corridor passes Brighton and Howell, so the trip is even shorter if you live along the US-23 line. Once you arrive, downtown Ann Arbor is very walkable. Parking garages near Kerrytown and along Main Street cost a few dollars an hour, and most of the stops below sit within a short walk of one another.

Cider Mills Worth the Drive

Dexter Cider Mill, at 3685 Central St. in Dexter, is Michigan's oldest continuously operating cider mill, founded in 1886, and it still wood-presses its cider on site. It is open Wednesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., running from late August through mid- to late November. Pick up a half-gallon of fresh cider, cinnamon-sugar donuts, and caramel apples before the short drive into town.

Wasem's Fruit Farm, at 6580 Judd Rd. in Milan, runs fall hours Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with u-pick apples through November, pumpkins in October, and donuts in plain, apple, blueberry, and pumpkin batters. Alber Orchard in Manchester, at 13011 Bethel Church Rd., adds an on-site winery to its orchard store. Hours can shift with the harvest, so check each farm's website or Facebook page before you go.

The Arb and Matthaei Botanical Gardens

Two University of Michigan gardens are free and made for October. Nichols Arboretum, known locally as the Arb, sits at 1610 Washington Hts. and is open from sunrise to sunset every day. Its trails drop down to the Huron River, and the hillside maples put on a strong color show in mid-October. Matthaei Botanical Gardens, at 1800 N. Dixboro Rd., is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, closed Mondays. The conservatory and outdoor gardens are both free, with metered parking around $1.80 an hour.

Kerrytown Farmers Market and Zingerman's

The Ann Arbor Farmers Market at Kerrytown, 315 Detroit St., runs Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. through the fall. It is a producer-only market with roughly 130 vendors selling produce, eggs, meat, baked goods, and prepared foods, so arrive early for the best selection. From there, walk a block to Zingerman's Delicatessen at 422 Detroit St., open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., for the deli's famous sandwiches. The small shops around Kerrytown are worth a browse too.

A Campus Walk and Game-Day Planning

A walk through the University of Michigan campus from the Diag to the Law Quad is a free way to spend an hour, and the campus looks its best in October. One thing to plan around: home football Saturdays at Michigan Stadium draw tens of thousands of visitors, so downtown crowds and parking fill early on game days. Check the schedule before you book; if you are not going to the game, choose a non-game weekend or arrive before 10 a.m.

A Simple Fall Itinerary

One easy rhythm: Saturday morning at the farmers market and Zingerman's, the Arb in the early afternoon, and a campus walk before dinner; Sunday morning at a cider mill on the way home. For an overnight, hotels cluster downtown and along the US-23 corridor and book early on game weekends.

Ann Arbor is close enough that many Mid-Michigan families make the trip often, and the US-23 corridor is one of the region's busiest commuter routes. If you are weighing a move between Mid-Michigan communities and the Ann Arbor area, I can help you compare commutes, housing types, and neighborhoods along the corridor. That is the kind of local knowledge I bring to every client across Genesee, Livingston, Oakland, and the surrounding counties.
