In Holly, Holly Baking Company on North Saginaw Street is a must-visit for anyone exploring this charming lake-country village. Their specialty is handmade pies, especially the seasonal fruit pies made with Michigan cherries and apples. The shop also carries cookies, muffins, and an excellent loaf of whole wheat bread. Stop in on a Saturday morning when the farmers market is running on Battle Alley, just a block away.
Lake Orion Village Grind and Bakery on Flint Street combines a coffee shop and bakery in one cozy space. In Howell, Sweet Spot Bake Shoppe on West Grand River Avenue specializes in custom cakes, cupcakes, and cookies, but their walk-in counter regularly features excellent daily specials. Their chocolate chip cookies, baked fresh throughout the day, have a devoted local following. Saginaw County: Frankenmuth and Beyond
No discussion of Mid-Michigan baked goods would be complete without mentioning Frankenmuth. Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn Bakery on Main Street is famous for its German-style pastries, including stollen, streusel, and fruit-filled kuchen. Their apple strudel, made from a recipe that has been in the family for generations, is worth the drive alone. The bakery also carries a selection of European chocolates and jams. Open daily from 8 AM to 6 PM, with extended hours during Oktoberfest and the holiday season.
For a more modern bakery experience, J. Heinrich's Bakery and Bistro on Main Street in Frankenmuth offers artisan breads, cake pops, and specialty cookies alongside a full espresso bar. Many bakeries also offer seasonal specials tied to local harvests, so it is worth asking what is fresh when you visit.
Most independent bakeries operate on limited hours and often sell out of popular items by mid-morning, especially on weekends. My advice, plan your visit for a weekday morning if you can, or arrive by 9 AM on Saturday to get the best selection. And bring cash, some of the smaller shops are cash-only.
