Fall is one of the best fishing seasons in Mid-Michigan, and you do not need a boat to enjoy it. As the water cools, walleye and perch move into the shallows of Saginaw Bay, and the Flint River offers easy shore access for bass, pike, and catfish close to home. With a $27 resident license and a few good spots, October and early November can be the most productive weeks of the year for a casual angler.

The Saginaw Bay Fall Bite

Saginaw Bay is one of Michigan's top walleye fisheries, and fall is when the action picks up. Adult walleye move back into the bay and the lower Saginaw River from October into early November, when locals say the run is on. Yellow perch are the other fall staple, with jumbo perch showing up through the autumn months. Good perch areas include the shoreline weed beds in 10 to 15 feet of water near Pinconning Point, Point au Gres, and Tawas Point, all reachable from shore or a small boat.

Bay City State Park: Shore Fishing Made Easy

Bay City State Park, formerly the Bay City State Recreation Area, sits right on Saginaw Bay about an hour from Flint. Its fishing pier extends into the bay and is one of the most accessible shore spots in the region, with more than 1,000 feet of beach beside it. Anglers catch walleye, perch, and smallmouth bass from the pier, and the adjacent Tobico Marsh is known for pike and carp. Vehicle entry requires the Michigan Recreation Passport, about $15 per year for residents and good at every state park and recreation area in Michigan.

Flint River Spots Close to Home

The Flint River is a warmwater river with walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and catfish, and it has public shore access in several places. The Bray Road Fishing Site (5030 Bray Road, Flint) is a dedicated public access point, and the Flushing river trail offers spots along the water in Flushing. The river runs right through Genesee County, so a quick after-school or weekend outing is easy to fit in. One important note: the Michigan DNR advises against eating fish caught on the Flint River downstream of Stepping Stone Falls, so check the state's Eat Safe Fish guides before keeping anything.

Licenses, Costs, and Rules

A Michigan resident annual all-species fishing license costs $26 plus a $1 surcharge, for a total of $27, and the 2026 licenses remain valid through March 31, 2027. Kids under 17 do not need a license, but they must follow the same rules and their catch counts toward a licensed adult's limit. Licenses are available online through the Michigan DNR. Always check current regulations for daily limits and seasons before you go, since they can change from year to year.

Gear and Timing for Fall Fishing

Fall fishing is mostly about timing. The best bites often come in the late afternoon and around dusk, when the cooling water pushes fish toward the shallows. Dress in layers and bring a windbreaker, because the bay breeze is real in October. For shore fishing, a medium-action rod, a few jig heads, and a box of worms or minnows cover most situations. A pair of polarized sunglasses helps you see structure and fish in the low autumn sun.

One of the quiet pleasures of living in Mid-Michigan is having a fishing spot within a short drive of nearly every community in the region. If you are new to the area or thinking about a move and want to know which communities sit close to the bay, the river, and the parks, I would be glad to help you compare the options.
