Fall is one of the most pleasant times of the year to ride in Michigan: the heat fades, the bugs thin out, and the trails fill with color as the maples turn. Whether you want a guided trail ride, a family lesson, or a place to trailer your own horse, Mid-Michigan has options across Genesee, Oakland, Livingston, and Lapeer counties, plus a day-trip destination or two.
Guided Trail Rides: Windwalker Farms in Fenton
For riders who want a horse, a guide, and nothing to worry about, Windwalker Farms (9204 Valley View Dr., Fenton) is the closest guided trail ride to the Flint and Grand Blanc area, about 20 minutes away. Its guided trail lesson takes up to six riders across 51 acres of trails, with flat routes for beginners and hills for more adventurous riders. The outing includes a riding-simulator lesson, a short arena session, about an hour on the trail, a group photo, and time to brush your horse. Pricing is a $40 booking fee plus $100 per rider, so one rider runs about $140 and two about $240. Reserve at 810-922-9055 or through windwalkerfarms.com.
Metamora and Lapeer County: Michigan's Equestrian Country
Metamora, in northern Lapeer County, is one of Michigan's best-known equestrian destinations, home of the historic Metamora Hunt country and a dense cluster of private horse farms and boarding barns. Most are not open for drop-in public rides, so the best way to see the area is the annual Metamora Hunt Country Stable Tour each August, a self-guided tour of private farms. Our Metamora community guide covers what life is like in this horse-friendly corner of Lapeer County.
For lessons instead, two Oakland County programs stand out. HOPE Horsepark, in the Clarkston and Oxford area, offers lessons, birthday events, and mom-and-me horsemanship classes for all ages and levels. Windmill Farm Riding Academy, in Highland Township, teaches private and group lessons in Western and English riding. Both are easy weekend drives from Genesee County.
Bring Your Own Horse: Equestrian Trails in State Parks
If you own or trailer horses, several state parks near Mid-Michigan keep dedicated equestrian trails. Ortonville Recreation Area in Oakland County, close to the Lapeer County line, has horse trails and the Hadley Hills horse campground, maintained with the DNR by the Ortonville Recreation Equestrian Association and managed through the Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area office in Metamora (810-797-4439). Seven Lakes State Park, just outside Holly, offers riding trails, and Brighton Recreation Area in Livingston County has about 19 miles of equestrian trails plus a stable, rentals, and equestrian camping. All require the Michigan Recreation Passport, explained at michigan.gov/dnr.
A Day-Trip Option: Pine River Stables in St. Clair
About 90 minutes east of the Flint area, Pine River Stables (1200 Stein Rd., St. Clair) runs guided trail rides with seasonal hours into mid-November. Weekday rides start around $67 per rider, and evening glow rides with s'mores are a family favorite. Reservations are strongly encouraged and rides are weather-dependent, so check pineriverstables.net before you go.
Tips for a First Fall Ride
A little preparation makes any ride smoother. Wear long pants and closed-toe boots with a low heel, and call ahead to confirm reservations, hours, and weight limits, which vary by stable. Arrive early to meet your horse and sign a waiver, and dress in layers, since fall mornings warm up quickly. Rides are weather-dependent, so have a backup plan. For beginners, a guided ride or lesson is the right first step, and most stables match riders with calm, experienced horses.
Riding country is a real part of the Mid-Michigan landscape, and it shapes where people choose to live. When I help buyers look at rural properties in Lapeer, Genesee, Oakland, and Livingston counties, acreage, barns, and trail access are often near the top of the list. If you want a property with room for horses, or simply wonder which communities sit close to the region's riding trails, I would be glad to help you explore the options.
