Saugatuck: Art, Beaches, and a Working Harbor
Drive time from Grand Blanc: Approximately 2 hours 45 minutes via I-96 W and US-31 S.
Saugatuck is one of Michigan's most popular Lake Michigan destinations, and for good reason. The downtown is a vibrant collection of art galleries, boutique shops, farm-to-table restaurants, and ice cream parlors, all set along the Kalamazoo River. The Saugatuck Dune Rides offer a thrilling trip up and down the towering sand dunes that separate the town from the lake. The Oval Beach is consistently ranked among the best beaches in the Midwest, with soft sand, clear water, and lifeguards on duty during peak season.
For families, the Saugatuck Chain Ferry is a beloved local tradition. This hand-cranked ferry has been transporting passengers across the Kalamazoo River since 1838, connecting downtown to the beach and the dune boardwalk. Kids love the short ride, and it costs just $2 per person. For dining, Phil's Bar & Grille on Water Street serves excellent seafood and steaks, while Uncommon Grounds on Butler Street is the go-to spot for coffee and pastries. The Grand Haven Farmers Market on Columbus Avenue runs Saturdays from 8 AM to 1 PM and is one of the best on the west side of the state. For a quiet escape, the Rosy Mound Natural Area just south of town offers a dune hike down to a secluded beach.
St. Joseph: Silver Beach and a Revitalized Downtown

St. Joseph has undergone a remarkable downtown revitalization in recent years, and its Silver Beach is one of the finest on the lake. The Silver Beach County Park features a wide, sandy beach, a playground, a carousel, and a concession stand. The Curious Kids' Museum and Discovery Zone are just steps from the beach and offer interactive exhibits for children. The St. Joseph Pier is a popular fishing spot, and the lighthouse at the end of the pier is a classic photo opportunity.
Downtown St. Joseph along State Street and Pleasant Street is filled with independent shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Schu's Grill & Bar on Main Street has been a local institution since 1934, serving burgers and sandwiches in a historic setting. Silver Beach Pizza on Broad Street is a family favorite with wood-fired pies and a rotating selection of Michigan craft beers. The St. Joseph Farmers Market on Lake Boulevard runs Saturdays and Wednesdays through the summer. For a unique experience, book a sunset sail on one of the charter boats that operate out of the St. Joseph Marina.
Practical Tips for Your Lake Michigan Getaway
Book accommodations early. Late August is still prime season on the lake. Hotels, vacation rentals, and campgrounds book up well in advance. If you are flexible, midweek stays are more affordable and less crowded.
Pack for lake weather. Lake Michigan creates its own microclimate. Afternoon temperatures can be 10 to 15 degrees cooler at the lake than inland, and a breeze off the water can feel chilly even on a warm August day. Bring layers, a windbreaker, and sunscreen.
Bring a Michigan Recreation Passport. Most state park beaches require a vehicle entry fee. The Recreation Passport is $14 for day use or $37 for an annual pass and is valid at all Michigan state parks. Buy it when you renew your license plate tabs online, or at the park entrance.
Plan for traffic on Sunday afternoons. Everyone heads back to the east side of the state on Sunday, and I-94 and I-96 can get congested. If you can, leave early Sunday morning or wait until Monday.
Bring cash for small purchases. Many farmers market vendors, ice cream stands, and small shops on the beach are cash-only or have a minimum for card payments.
