Michigan's fall color season begins in the Upper Peninsula in mid-to-late September, sweeps across the northern Lower Peninsula in early October, and reaches southern Michigan in late October. That steady march is the state's most reliable autumn rhythm: peak color starts in the northwest and works its way to the southeast over the course of several weeks.

The color flows from northwest to southeast, and shorelines typically peak later than inland areas. That means the same October weekend can look completely different on a lakeshore than it does a few miles inland, so choosing the right region for the right week is the key to catching full color instead of bare branches.

Timing shifts a little every year with weather and overnight temperatures, so these are the 2026 forecast windows drawn from Explore Fall's Michigan foliage map, the Old Farmer's Almanac, and UP Travel's fall color reports. Use them to plan day trips, color drives, and weekend getaways across both peninsulas.

2026 Peak Color Windows by Region

Here is how the 2026 season shapes up region by region, from the far western Upper Peninsula to far southeast Michigan.

Western Upper Peninsula

Color begins around mid-September in the western Upper Peninsula. Peak color runs roughly from the last week of September through the first two weeks of October, with the 2026 forecast peak near the end of September into early October.

Eastern Upper Peninsula: color begins in September, and peak color generally arrives in the second week of October, varying by location, with some areas peaking into mid-October.

Northern Lower Peninsula: color begins in early October, and peak timing varies by location, generally arriving in the second and third weeks of October; Explore Fall's map estimates around October 20 for the region.

Southern Lower Peninsula: peak color arrives in late October, generally in the last two weeks of the month; October 29 is a location-specific estimate from Explore Fall's map for the farthest-south areas.

Planning note: Independent county-by-county tracker More Than Just Parks estimates most Michigan counties reach peak color around October 14, with the earliest peaks in the far west Upper Peninsula and the latest in far southeast Michigan. Forecasts can shift with weather, so check current conditions before traveling.

Day Trips and Color Drives Across Michigan

Scenic fall color drives are a favorite Michigan tradition, and 2026 is a good year to plan a few. Because peak color moves from the northwest corner of the state toward the southeast, the views change dramatically with both latitude and calendar: a route that catches full color in the Upper Peninsula in early October will catch the same kind of color in southern Michigan weeks later.

The Upper Peninsula peaks earliest, so late September into early October is the window for its shoreline and woodland color. The southern Lower Peninsula, by contrast, lasts into late October, which means the leaf-peeping season stretches on long after the northern hills have dropped their leaves.

The simple strategy for 2026: start in the west and head south. Travelers can follow the color south through October, catching the Upper Peninsula at its peak first and then meeting the season again in the Lower Peninsula as the month unfolds. Pack layers, check conditions before you go, and give yourself time to pull over often, because the best views are usually the unplanned ones.
