October is the month Mid-Michigan has been building toward all year. The maples across Genesee, Oakland, Livingston, and Lapeer counties reach their peak color, pumpkin patches fill with families, and the cider mills stir back to life. It is autumn at its fullest, and it rewards anyone who plans for it.

Peak Fall Color Drives
Michigan's peak color typically arrives between the first and third weeks of October. The Department of Natural Resources publishes a weekly fall color map. Check it before you go and drive midweek to beat the traffic. October is prime season for the region's family farms. Flushing Farms in Flushing offers three corn mazes, a pick-your-own pumpkin patch, hayrides, and a petting zoo. Porter's Orchard in Goodrich pairs its maze and u-pick pumpkins with apples, cider, and fresh donuts. Spicer Orchards in Fenton keeps its corn maze open through mid-November with wagon rides and a farm market. In Lapeer County, Fick Farms takes a quieter approach, while Diehl's Orchard in Holly and Montrose Orchards north of Flint round out the circuit. Go on a weekday morning for the mazes nearly to yourself.
Festivals and Halloween Traditions
The season's biggest evenings center on downtown events. Fenton's downtown trick-or-treat night, billed as "So Good It's Scary," brings dozens of merchants out in costume. In Flint, the Ooky Spooky Light Show at Longway Planetarium runs through late October, and the Applewood Estate Fall Harvest Festival hosts an early-October day of cider, apples, and house tours. The Flint Institute of Arts adds gallery trick-or-treating, and the Scarecrow Fest at Frankenmuth's River Place Shops fills October weekends with creative displays. Dates shift year to year, so confirm on official calendars before you plan.
Cider Mills and Final Market Saturdays
No October in Mid-Michigan is complete without a cider mill run. - Stock the pantry now. Michigan apples freeze beautifully for pies and sauce, and hard-neck garlic planted this month becomes next summer's harvest.
- Do the outdoor home tasks before the cold snap. Gutters, hoses, and furnace this month, or they wait until spring.
